Japanese Notation is a compact way to show shaping instructions directly on a garment diagram.
In Knit It Now patterns, the notation is read as:
stitches - rows - times
Example:
1-2-9 means work 1 stitch every 2 rows, 9 times.
Depending on the shaping area, that may mean decrease, increase, bind off, or hold stitches. The diagram and section heading tell you what action to take.
