The goal: Braided Cable

Knit 2 columns of cables with 2 purl stitches between and on each side.
The cables are reversed and alternate creating the braided (plait) appearance.

Cable 1
- Remove the LEFT 2 stitches and hold them aside.
- Transfer the RIGHT 2 stitches to the empty needles.
- Replace the held stitches on the newly emptied needles
Cable 2:
- Remove the RIGHT 2 stitches and hold them aside
- Transfer the LEFT 2 stitches to the empty needles
- Replace the held stitches on the newly emptied needles.
Setup

- Cast on 40 stitches with any method (left 20-1, right 1-20)
- Knit 6 rows (carriage on the right)
- Mark the needlebed, indicating the cable stitches and the purl columns
- Knit 3 rows

- *Work Cable 1
Carefully Knit 1 row
Knit 3 rows (Reform XX purl stitches) - Work Cable 2 over needles: L7-4 and R2-5
Carefully knit 1 row
Knit 3 rows (Reform XX purl stitches)
- Work Cable 1 over needles: L5-2 and R4-7
Carefully knit 1 row
Knit 3 rows (Reform XX purl stitches) - Work Cable 2 over needles: L7-4 and R2-5
Carefully knit 1 row
Knit 3 rows (Reform XX purl stitches)* - Repeat from * to * at least 1 more time.
