Get familiar with the Russel levers. The goal is to understand the relationship between the levers and the needle positions. Understanding this technique will serve you throughout your machine knitting journey. It is used not only for short row shaping, but for stitch patterning as well.
Hold Practice with No Yarn
- Put 30 needles in working position.
- Set your carriage for plain knitting (both Russel levers not engaged).
- Pass the carriage back and forth. What happens?
- Put a few needles into hold (D).
- Engage the LEFT Russel lever.
- Pass the carriage to the left. What happens?
- With the RIGHT Russel lever set to plain knitting, pass the carriage. What happens?
- Put a few needles in hold.
- Engage both Russel levers (set your carriage to hold in both directions).
- Pass the carriage back and forth. What happens?
- Continue to play with needles in hold and the levers in different positions until you get a feel for the relationship between them.
