These concepts are so important that they are worth repeating.
- Decide on ONE machine for the next few projects. Get to know (and master) this machine. Understand its quirks and personality.
- Decide on ONE yarn type for the next few projects.
- Determine the gauge in ONE stitch pattern. Use it again and again.
- Learn how the yarn knits. Does it have knots to watch for? Are there plys that can be problematic if you have to rip rows?
- Learn how the knitting washes and wears. Give your swatch the "throw it in the wash with jeans" test and see what happens.
- Is the color and fiber something you would wear? Don't spend time perfecting the fit of your sweater with junk yarn in a terrible color that you won't enjoy working with or wearing.
- To test the wearability, washability, and workability of a yarn, knit a small blanket using your chosen yarn and stitch pattern. You can always donate it to your local animal shelter as a "blankie" for a pet looking for a home.
Before even thinking about knitting a sweater, get
experience with your chosen yarn. Once you create a "blueprint" of your
perfect sweater, you can experiment with different yarns. Why complicate
the fitting process by introducing all the variables that different yarns
and stitch patterns bring?
