Armholes that are too deep or shallow can cause many fit issues. Examine your favorite sweater to determine the depth of the armhole.
Because the sleeve cap must match the armhole, this adjustment can be the most challenging.
BUT: This adjustment is not easily accomplished with set in sleeve patterns.
To raise the armhole for set in sleeves:
Because the sleeve cap must match the armhole, this adjustment can be the most challenging.
For many sleeve styles, adjusting the depth of the armhole
requires an equal adjustment to the sleeve.
For example, if you raise your armhole by 1 inch that would be 1 inch in front and 1 inch in back. You would then make your sleeve cap a total of 2" narrower (so the sleeve fits in the adjusted shortened armhole.
BUT: This adjustment is not easily accomplished with set in sleeve patterns.
To raise the armhole for set in sleeves:
- Use a smaller size pattern
- Substitute the smaller armhole depth from the smaller pattern
- Knit the corresponding sleeve from the smaller patter
In other words, DO NOT adjust the armhole depth without re-charting the set in sleeve cap.
